SUMMARY:Planning Ahead: A Compassionate Workshop for End-of-Life Readiness
DESCRIPTION:It’s never too soon to prepare for the end of life. \nBeing prepared doesn’t hasten death\, it frees you up to live fully. \nDo you have an advance directive and a medical proxy in case you are unable to make decisions for yourself? \nDo you and your loved ones know what you want in your dying process and for the disposition of your body? \nMost people do not want to languish on life support machines at the end of their lives\, but have a hard time getting around to filling out the directives to prevent that from happening. \nWe are going to have facilitated community conversations about the nuances of those decisions and support each other in the process of getting the paperwork completed. \nThursday September 18th 6:30-8:30 \nWe’ll gather for some conversation about making the personal decisions that are included in the official  documents you need to prepare in order to maximize the likelihood that you get what you want and need as you die and after your death. \nSaturday October 18th 2-5 \nWe will get into the nitty gritty details and create the documentation. If you do not leave with the paperwork completed\, you will leave knowing exactly what questions remain and what you need to do to finish the process. \nThe cost for these two conversations is $30.00 in order to cover materials. \nIt will be held at Ruscombe Community Health Center \n4801 Yellowwood Ave\, Baltimore MD 21209 \nSharon Moore and Diana Keener are your facilitators. We are both experienced Death Doulas. \nWe will be using the Five Wishes and the workbook “I’m Dead\, So Now What?” as tools for this discussion. We will also introduce you to a wide range of other resources. \nTo register or if you have further questions\, please contact Diana at dianackina@gmail.com

SUMMARY:The Energy of the Summer Solstice: Light\, Balance\, and Intention
DESCRIPTION:As the wheel of the year turns\, we arrive at a powerful threshold: the Summer Solstice\, occurring on June 21st. This celestial event marks the longest day and shortest night of the year—a radiant celebration of sunlight\, abundance\, and life in full bloom. \nThe solstice is more than just a seasonal marker; it’s a spiritual invitation to align with the rhythms of nature\, reflect on inner light\, and set intentional paths forward. At this peak of brightness\, we’re reminded that\, as Victor Hugo wrote\, “Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.” \nCulturally\, the solstice has long been honored with rituals and festivals celebrating fertility\, growth\, and the life-giving power of the sun. Spiritually\, it’s a potent time to reconnect with ourselves\, assess our personal journey\, and bask in the light of what we’ve cultivated so far. \nTo attune yourself to the energy of the solstice\, consider these practices to ground\, uplift\, and transform your energy: \n🌞 Sunlight Meditation \nTake time on the solstice to greet the sun—either at sunrise or during its peak at midday. Find a quiet space outdoors. Close your eyes and feel the sun on your skin. Imagine it filling you with vitality\, clarity\, and joy. Breathe in warmth\, breathe out anything that feels heavy or stagnant. \nAffirmation: “I open to the light within and around me. I am radiant\, balanced\, and grounded in my truth.” \n🔥 Fire Ritual for Release and Intention \nLight a candle or build a small bonfire (safely). Write down something you wish to release—an old habit\, belief\, or fear. Burn the paper as a symbolic gesture of letting go. Then write an intention for the season ahead. Hold it to your heart and visualize it unfolding with ease and purpose. \nAffirmation: “With each flame\, I release what no longer serves me. I welcome new beginnings with open arms.” \n🌿 Nature Connection Walk \nTake a walk in nature\, preferably barefoot if possible\, to literally ground your energy. Notice the colors\, sounds\, textures\, and scents. Nature is your greatest teacher this time of year—lush\, vibrant\, and patient. \nAs Ralph Waldo Emerson said\, “Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.” Let yourself slow down\, breathe deeply\, and absorb the wisdom of the earth. \nAffirmation: “I walk in harmony with nature. I trust the timing of my life.” \nSummer is a time of expansion\, expression\, and outward movement. Use this solar energy to nurture your goals\, deepen your self-awareness\, and celebrate the beauty of simply being alive. Whether you’re dancing around a fire\, meditating in the sun\, or quietly journaling your thoughts\, let your solstice rituals be rooted in intention and gratitude. \nAs the light bathes the world\, it also illuminates the soul. Honor your inner fire\, acknowledge how far you’ve come\, and step boldly into the fullness of who you are becoming. \nMay your Summer Solstice be a luminous turning point—rich with light\, balance\, and purpose.

SUMMARY:Root & Renew: Therapeutic Eco-Yoga for Stress Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Register here \nMondays April 7-June 9th\, 6:30-7:30PM \nShare the intertwining healing power of yoga and nature in gracious community at Ruscombe Holistic Community Health Center this spring! \nIn this class your senses will be bathed in the healing sensations of the beautiful grounds of Ruscombe Mansion\, supporting the nurturing of your nervous system through the ancient traditions of Hatha\, Kripalu\, and Ashtanga yoga including breathwork; slow/gentle mindful movement\, and meditation in savasana. \nResearch continues to grow steadily on the immense impact of yoga and nature on our mind\, bodies\, and spirits. Collectively\, yoga and eco-therapy have hundreds of studies showing decrease in pain\, enhanced brain function\, decreased anxiety and depression symptoms\, improved concentration and focus\, lowered blood pressure\, and increases in dopamine\, serotonin\, and oxytocin\, just to name a few benefits. Poly-Vagal Nerve theory is one way to understand this impact\, as our Vagus Nerve\, or wandering nerve\, carries information from our environment into our nervous system and up to our brain\, then back down to our bodies\, telling it how to respond. As we attend to the Vagus Nerve through yoga and nature we can begin to build a healthy relationship with our nervous system\, body\, mind\, and soul to help it at any given moment. For example\, when we learn how to move and breathe on the mat\, we can calm ourselves down in times of threat in the world. \nWe’ll become the observers and befriend our nervous systems for optimal existence in this tremendously stressful world. Each session will have a theme: \n\nSession 1: Air and Awareness\nSession 2: Earth and Interbeing\nSession 3: Water and Wonder\nSession 4: Fire and Freedom\nSession 5: Ether and Enlightenment\nSession 6: Animals and Animism\nSession 7: Ancestors and Attunement\nSession 8: Plants and Possibilities\nSession 9: Root and Renew\n\nPlease wear comfortable clothing\, and bring anything that makes you feel safe. Water is highly recommended. We have mats\, bolsters\, blankets\, blocks\, and straps. Weather permitting we will be outside\, and accessing nature’s elements with gratitude. Please come a few minutes before 6:30 to settle in. Be well! \nElizabeth McCarthy is a yoga therapist\, owner of Healing Self Wellness\, mom\, and wisdom seeker. Her ancestry includes\, Wyandotte Native American\, French\, German\, and Scotch-Irish. She has been a licensed clinical professional counselor for 20 years\, and yoga teacher for 7 years. Her passion lies in sharing the healing power of yoga and nature for trauma and other mental health concerns through over 90 hours of specialized training in these areas. \nCost $20/ Class \n$160 / Series \n25% of proceeds goes to Ruscombe Community Scholarship Fund \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Stillwaters: Mindfulness Meditation for the Busy Mind
DESCRIPTION:In-person Drop-in Classes with Mira Tessman \nMonthly (usually 4th Wed; sometimes 3rd/5th).  \n7:00 PM – 8:30 PM  \nJune 25\, Wednesday-Mira\nJuly 16\, Wednesday-Mira\nAug. 27- Wednesday- Facilitator TBA \nMindful Meditation is the art and science of an ancient practice for living with the challenges of these modern times. Each month\, we will explore a mindfulness topic and practice skills that support awareness and acceptance of life’s unfolding moments and that offer insights and wisdom to guide our engagement\, decisions\, and actions. Practicing with like-minded folks on the path together helps us travel much further. Let’s journey on the path together. \n  \nNo charge \nSuggested Donation $10-15 \nCommunity Hall at Ruscombe Mansion Community Health Center \nMore info: https://tinyurl.com/5yyn4cv7 \n“If you want to go quickly\, go alone. If you want to go far\, go together.”  \nAfrican Proverb \nThe Eightfold Path of the Buddha’s teachings offer us skills that can guide us towards greater equanimity. As we practice and become more skillful at taming our thoughts and recognizing our patterns of thinking\, noticing the stirrings of emotions and body sensations\, we are better able to pause habitual reactivity and make more mindful choices about how to respond effectively with greater understanding and compassion. \nWhile a daily mindfulness meditation practice helps us cultivate more skillful means of quieting the mind and body\, practicing in community as a sangha helps us to strengthen developing skills and apply them meaningfully in our daily lives and relationships with others. \nFree parking lot on the east side of Yellowwood Ave. and free street parking. Follow signs to the “Community Hall” on the ground level off of the parking lot. \nRestrooms are located on the first floor hallway. Leave shoes outside of the Meditation Hall entrance. Back jacks\, chairs\, and small bolsters are available. Or if you prefer\, bring your own meditation cushion. Masks are optional and suggested at times when Covid infections are on the rise. If you have cold or flu symptoms\, please stay home and take care of yourself. \nPlease share this good news with others who may be interested.
