National Vision Awareness Month
Vision Information from Bob Darlington July 2006
During this month of national vision awareness we are being told to get to the optometrist and have our eyes examined; but there are many alternatives to what traditional optometry can offer us. There are numerous exercises designed to help improve vision, and there are many simple, daily things we can do to preserve and enhance our vision. It is important to breathe and blink, as our eyes require an enormous amount of oxygen and blood to function properly. Blinking lubricates the eyes and gives them many momentary breaks throughout the day. We spend too much of our time in front of computers, gazing at the screen without blinking, breathing or exercising our periphery and distance vision. It is no wonder that macular degeneration has become a vision malady of our time: our central vision is constantly being overworked. We need to get up from our computers every twenty minutes and look into the distance for several minutes without our glasses to allow our lenses to relax. Vision improvement exercises have been around for a hundred years, and we need to take time and look into these alternatives before getting a stronger prescription that will only continue to make us rely on glasses, which are crutches we will always lean on if we don’t find alternatives.
